langtang trek

Ms. Pratikshya Kandel
I'm sure many of you have heard about the Langtang Valley Trek, but experiencing it in person is something completely different.I recently completed the Langtang Valley Trek in just six days. Those six days turned out to be some of the most unforgettable days of my life.

To be honest, Langtang Valley isn't really a trek that should be completed in just six days. I wish I had more days to explore this place without any rush. The trails, the breathtaking mountains, the untouched nature, and the warmth of the local people make it a destination you never want to leave.

So, let me take you through my Langtang adventure.

Day 1: Kathmandu to Bamboo

Our journey began at 6:00 AM on June 2, 2026. Me and my friends took a bus from Kathmandu Bus Park to Syabrubesi, which is the gateway to the Langtang Valley Trek. During the long drive, we stopped for tea and snacks, grabbed some coffee, listened to music, and shared stories from our previous trekking adventures. We were having such a great time that we hardly noticed how quickly the journey was passing.

Our first stop was in Bidur, where we had some tea, and refreshed ourselves before continuing the journey. After that we stopped to get our trekking permits, which cost us NPR 100 per person. We then reached Dhunche, where we had our lunch. After lunch, we got back on the bus and continued to Syabrubesi, which isn't very far from Dhunche. We finally arrived at Syprubesi at around 2:00 PM.

Most of my friends were actually there to participate in the Langtang Marathon, but I wasn't. My trip had been planned at the last minute. Thankfully, I listened to them.

Finally, we started walking around 2:30 pm from Syabrubesi. Our destination that day was in Bamboo, which is not that far from Syaprubesi so we didn't rush and continued our journey slowly with taking photos, videos, admiring the beautiful surroundings, and enjoying every moment. And we reached Bamboo at around 6:30 pm. Once we arrived in Bamboo, we checked into our tea house, unpacked our bags, changed into warmer clothes, and gathered to share our stories. And enjoyed a simple Nepali dinner together. The tea house offered me a package that included accommodation, dinner, and breakfast, and my total expense for the day was around 1,500 rupees.

Day 2: Bamboo to Langtang Village

This day was going to be one of the longest and most demanding days of our trek. Our goal was to hike from Bamboo to Langtang Village. We woke up around 5:30 am, had breakfast, packed our bags, and got ready for another exciting day. Around 7:00 AM, we all started walking. As we climbed higher, the trail became longer and steeper. Sometimes we felt tired, sometimes thirsty, but we kept encouraging each other. We shared snacks, laughed, talked about old memories, and kept moving forward together. The trail was incredibly beautiful. We crossed waterfalls, walked through dense forests, passed cozy tea houses, and were greeted by friendly local people and foreigners. We planned our lunch at Lama Hotel. After a delicious meal and a short rest, we continued our journey.

Along the trail, we kept meeting other trekkers from different countries and different parts of Nepal. Some conversations lasted only a few minutes, but they added so much warmth to the journey. That's one of the things I love most about trekking.

Although I had already completed several treks before, I found the Langtang trail to be one of the most enjoyable. The paths were well-maintained, and beautiful, making every step enjoyable. Eventually, we reached Ghodatabela, one of the most beautiful spots along the trail. We spent some time there taking more pictures and a short rest before continuing toward Langtang Village. After some time, we arrived at the site of the Old Langtang Village.

One of my friends shared the heartbreaking history of this place. He explained that before the devastating 2015 Nepal earthquake, the original Langtang Village stood right here. During the earthquake, a massive avalanche swept down from the mountains and buried almost the entire village within minutes. As he pointed toward the mountains and showed us old photographs of what the village had once looked like, the story became even more emotional. Standing there, surrounded by silence, it was difficult to imagine the tragedy that had unfolded in the very place where we were standing.

After spending some quiet moments reflecting on the history of the place, we continued our journey toward the new Langtang Village. And around 7:00 PM, we finally reached New Langtang Village. It honestly felt like a huge relief. And my friends helped arrange a room for me in the same hotel where they were staying. After taking a short rest, we went out to explore Langtang Village. We had our dinner and returned to our hotel, talked for a while, and finally went to bed around 10:00 PM. My accommodation, including meals, cost around 1,300 rupees for that day. Lying in bed after such a long day, I couldn't stop wondering what tomorrow would bring.

Day 3: Langtang to Kyanjin Gompa

day 3 langtan

The next morning, I woke up around 6:00 AM. Unlike the previous day, today's hike was much shorter which is only around three hours from Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa. Watching breathtaking sunrise views, we had our simple breakfast of roti, vegetable curry, and hot tea. After breakfast, we packed our backpacks and planned to leave around 7:00 AM. Leaving Langtang Village behind, we slowly gained altitude. With every step, the mountains seemed to come closer. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking.

We laughed, shared childhood memories, talked about our dreams, exchanged love stories, and encouraged one another throughout the walk. Somehow, those conversations made us forget how far we had already walked. Along the trail, we stopped at a small lodge where we tasted fresh yak yogurt for the first time. It was unlike any yogurt I had ever had before, simple, slightly creamy, and refreshing.

After crossing one final bridge, we knew we were almost there. Ahead of us stood Kyanjin Gompa, surrounded by colorful prayer flags dancing in the wind and some of the most breathtaking mountain scenery I had ever seen. At that moment, every step of the journey felt completely worthwhile. We reached Kyanjin Village around 10 am. We received a warm welcome from the people there.

After checking into our hotel, I dropped my backpack, and had our lunch. Till today, I still remember how delicious that meal was.Sometimes it's not the ingredients that make food memorable, it's the place, the people, and the journey that give it its flavor.

Kyanjin Gompa is the last permanent settlement on the trek. Surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks, the village feels peaceful, isolated, and incredibly beautiful.

We had plenty of time that day  so we decided to hike to Kyanjin Ri. The trail to Kyanjin Ri was much steeper than I expected. After hiking for almost 3 hours we reached the summit. From there we saw glaciers and towering Himalayan peaks, which was simply unforgettable. It was one of the most beautiful views I had ever seen. We spent some time taking photos, enjoying a few snacks, and quietly soaking in the peaceful surroundings before the clouds slowly rolled in and covered the mountains.

After taking a short break, we continued to the second viewpoint: Kyanjin II. The trail became much steeper than before and even more challenging. After 30 minutes we reached the second view point. We spent some time there too taking photos, and slowly making our way back to the village just before sunset.

Day 4: Challenging day: Tsergo Ri
langtang trekking
The next day was all about Tsergo Ri, the hike we had been talking about since the beginning of the trek. Almost everyone we met told us not to go because of its altitude and difficult trail. But we wanted to challenge ourselves. We left Kyanjin around 9:30 with light backpacks. The trail was long and demanding. At one point we accidentally followed the wrong path and lost some time before finding the correct route again.

As we climbed higher, the air became thinner and the wind stronger. There were very few people on the trail.

After nearly six hours we finally reached Tsergo Ri, almost 5,000 metres above sea level. The clouds covered the famous panoramic view, but I did not feel disappointed. For me, reaching the summit felt like an achievement. I was happy that I experienced no altitude sickness and never felt like giving up. We spent some time capturing the moments and started our way back to Kyanjin village. The descent was much easier, and we reached Kyanjin Gompa around 6 in the evening. By then, we were completely exhausted. After having dinner, we went straight to our bed.

Day 5: My first trail run

my first trail run at langtang

I was not officially registered for the Langtang Marathon. Still, my friends encouraged me to run with them just for the experience. I handed my backpack to the porters and stood at the starting line.

The race began at 9 in the morning. The route covered around 32 kilometres through forests, rocky trails, rivers and mountain villages. I ran whenever I had enough energy and walked whenever the climbs became too difficult. After nearly six hours, I crossed the finish line. I finished seventh among the women. Although every part of my body felt exhausted, I was proud that I had completed the marathon without any preparation.

After the marathon, we watched the prize distribution ceremony, took lots of photos together and celebrated with our friends. It was the perfect way to end such an amazing trip.

Day 6: Back to home

The next morning, it was finally time to return to Kathmandu. The ride home was much quieter than the journey to Langtang. Everyone was tired. Our legs were sore, but our hearts wanted to stay in the mountains a little longer.

When I look back now, I realize that Langtang gave me much more than beautiful mountain views. It gave me peace. For six days, life felt so simple. There were no work deadlines, no rush, no traffic, no constant phone notifications. Just me and my peace.
