If you have started researching big treks in Nepal, you have probably met this question already: Manaslu Circuit or Annapurna Circuit? Both are famous, both cross a high pass, and both take around two weeks. But the experience on the ground is quite different.
We guide both routes, so here is an honest comparison to help you decide.
The Annapurna Circuit is the classic. For decades it has been called one of the great long distance treks in the world. You walk around the Annapurna massif, climb to Thorong La Pass at 5,416 metres, and drop down to the sacred village of Muktinath. You can see our full plan here: Annapurna Circuit Trek, 15 Days.
The Manaslu Circuit is the quieter cousin. It loops around Mount Manaslu, the eighth highest mountain in the world, and crosses Larkya La Pass at about 5,100 metres. It sits in a restricted area, which shapes almost everything about the experience. Here is our itinerary: Manaslu Circuit Trek, 15 Days.
This is where the two treks differ the most.
The Annapurna Circuit is popular, especially in October and November. Teahouses in places like Manang, Thorong Phedi, and High Camp can fill up fast, and the trail can feel busy. The upside is that you will meet trekkers from all over the world, and services are easy to find.
Manaslu is much quieter. Because the region needs a restricted area permit and you must trek with a licensed guide, far fewer people walk it. You often have the trail to yourself for hours, and evenings in the villages feel calm and personal. If solitude is what you are after, Manaslu wins this round easily. But it also gotta to see
One honest note on Annapurna: roads have crept into parts of the route, and jeeps now run on some sections. Many trekkers choose to skip those stretches, but it does change the feel compared with the old days. Manaslu is still largely a walking trail from start to finish.
Both treks are demanding, and neither is a casual walk. Both involve long days, steady climbing, and a high pass above 5,000 metres.
Annapurna has better infrastructure. Lodges are comfortable, food choices are wide, and the route is well marked. Its acclimatization stops, especially in Manang, are well established, which helps your body adjust before Thorong La. The pass itself is a long, cold push, but the trail is clear and many people have done it before you.
Manaslu feels tougher in a different way. Trails are narrower, some days are longer, and lodges are simpler, especially higher up. The Larkya La crossing is a big day, usually starting before sunrise. You should be comfortable with basic conditions and a bit more effort. If you are fit and well prepared, it is very achievable, but it rewards people with some trekking experience.
On either route, altitude is the main risk. Please read our Altitude Sickness Prevention Guide before you go. Acclimatization, hydration, and a safe ascent rate matter far more than raw fitness.
Annapurna gives you variety. In two weeks you walk through green rice terraces, rhododendron forests, deep river gorges, alpine meadows, and finally a dry, high desert landscape that feels almost like Tibet. Views of Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Gangapurna, and Dhaulagiri are stunning. Add Muktinath, a holy site for both Hindus and Buddhists, and the cultural side is rich. If you want to add a spectacular detour, the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake takes you to one of the highest lakes in the world.
Manaslu feels wilder and more remote. You start in warm lowlands and climb into deep valleys, past waterfalls and suspension bridges, into villages with strong Tibetan influence. Prayer flags, mani walls, and monasteries line the trail, and village life still feels traditional. The mountain views are dramatic, with Manaslu itself dominating the skyline near Samagaun. Many trekkers say the cultural atmosphere is the real highlight.
This matters when planning. Annapurna needs standard permits and is open to independent trekkers. Manaslu needs a special restricted area permit, a licensed guide, and a minimum group size, so booking through a trusted company is essential. We handle all of this for you, so you can focus on the walking.
Choose the Annapurna Circuit if you want variety, comfortable lodges, and a well established route, or if this is one of your first big treks in Nepal.
Choose the Manaslu Circuit if you want fewer people, deeper culture, and a more remote experience, and you are happy with simpler facilities.
If you want even more culture, the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek, 21 Days adds a hidden Buddhist valley that few travelers ever see.
If a two week trek feels like too much right now, there are great options to build confidence. The Mardi Himal Trek and Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek are lovely introductions to the Annapurna region. There is no wrong answer here. Annapurna is the proven classic with variety and comfort. Manaslu is the quiet, raw, and deeply cultural alternative. Both will test you, and both will give you memories that last a lifetime.
